Recently, I was given the opportunity to sign up to participate in an awesome ministry: Life Quest.
What is Life Quest?
Life Quest is an outreach and mentoring ministry geared to juvenilles detained in juvenile facilities.
Yes, I know...sounds crazy, right? But for those who know me, I have a heart for youth, specially lost youth. I work with at risk youth and part of what we do is prevent kids from getting themselves into situations or choices that can affect their future.
In December I helped out in the Christmas event over at the John Paul Detention Center just right outside of Las Cruces and let me tell you, that event completely changed my life. I didn't do much of the reaching out to the kids but I was able to help out and learn more about what the ministry is about. And in January 30th I went to the first training orientation.
Since the first orientation I could see how God is working here in New Mexico and in this State facility, which some of the staff have said it is a first since we all know how bad the government is about "religious activities", specially those that have to do with Christian Organizations. I am looking foward to what will be done in the months to come and in the way that God will use the volunteers and directors of Life Quest. It is amazing the group of people God has put together!
One thing that I have learned through out this experience is that there is no such thing as a lost cause. God is sovereign and don't get me wrong, those kids are locked up for a reason, but just like some of the kids that work with at the Weed and Seed program (my job), these kids are searching for a purpose and guidance, and that is where the Life Quest mentors come into play.
There is such a need for help so if you feel inclined or lead to help out let me know.
I can't even start describing how awesome this ministry is. I think you need a special kind of heart to volunteer. The saddest thing that I have seen in this world is that these kids have grown up thinking that there is no future for them and that no one cares for them, but that is the main thing: we care!
Jesus preached to the rejects of society, tax collectors, prostitutes. I believe that as the Christian community it is our task to do that same thing.
I will keep y'all posted on things that happen through this great ministry.
I invite you all to learn more about Life Quest, visit their website at http://www.lifequestusa.org/
