RE-POST: Empowered

I read this from one of the daily devotionals I get sent to my email, sometimes there is some really good stuff.

It got me to think about how I handle the time I spend with the Lord in His Word...I long to be distraction free, and then some way or another I get distracted. I remember when I worked at Fort Lone Tree, a Christian Camp in Ruidoso, NM in 2006. Every morning I would get up early (we had staff meetings everyday at 7:30a.m) and would go to a quiet place (this camp is in the mountains so there was a lot to choose from) and just dig in the Word of God and pray...it was easy because of the nature of the place, but after that summer and returning to live in "civilization", it became harder to retreat myself from distractions and just spend time with God.

This is a challenge for me, since my time with God is important, and it is so easy to get distracted when you have a cellphone, computer, tv, etc.

Empowered
And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them.”
Deuteronomy 5:1
Moses is going to minister on the importance of really being obedient to the Word of God. If you do not obey God’s Word, it is of no value to you. Understand that—no value. It is like having a flashlight without batteries. There is no power without the Holy Spirit—there is no power in your life. If there is no obedience in your life, the Word of God becomes void in your life and you have no power.
Interesting enough, Moses used the word hear constantly. Notice the importance of really paying attention, concentrating. When you sit down to read the Bible, when you sit down to pray, how many times do you play around with something and not fully concentrate? So, you are not going to get anything out of your reading or praying. When you read, when you pray, you need to be where there are no distractions; phones are off, the television is off. Then you can concentrate on the Word of God, and the Word of God can take effect in your life. Why? Because you are really listening.
When we take the time to read God’s Word, pray and spend quiet time with the Lord, He will empower us, through the Holy Spirit, to live our lives in obedience, glorifying Him!
We may depend upon it as a certainty that where
there is no holy living there is no Holy Ghost.
