I love the movie "300"...

Before you get me wrong, I am not promoting movies that contain extreme violence, sex and nudity. I believe that as Christians we are to dislike the things of the world, but we also can't be legalistic about things.

Anyways, there is a really awesome analogy based on the 300 I wanted to share. I find it interesting how in the movie, the men that join the army of the Spartans lead by Leonidas are said to be the strongest and most equipped of all Spartan men. In other word, they did not pick the amateur or the inexperienced. According to the movie, Spartan men were trained since they were young in the arts of war and combat and they went through very intense training. Other civilizations envied them because of how great they were in war.

The key thing here is that they trained and were prepared and never stopped training. We should be the same in our walk with the Lord.

When I first came to Saving Grace I thought I had it all figured out, I thought life would be simple and would be a smooth ride. Little did I know that it would be more like a Six Flags roller coaster instead. People who are in the world and come to salvation are sometimes lead to believe that because they said the prayer all of their problems have been solved and when the first trials, hardships or even rejection from friends and family come they give up and go back to their sinful nature. That is why it is important to disciple new believers and teach the importance of having a strong prayer life.

I have been working out for the last few weeks and have realized that it is hard to mantain and healthy balanced lifestyle, I am often tempted to be lazy and not go to the gym. It is the same with our walk: We need to prepare ourselves Spiritually to survive in the daily Spiritual Battle we go through.

I like the way that the apostle Paul uses the analogy of someone that competes in the greek olympic games of the day in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain [it]. And everyone who competes [for the prize] is temperate in all things. Now they [do it] to obtain a perishable crown, but we [for] an imperishable [crown]. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as [one who] beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring [it] into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

Every time I am at the gym I see all these really huge guys who are all about working their bodies and that is their main goal and I think that is the way that Paul was referring to in these verses. We are to push ourselves in studying the Bible and growing daily, not once or twice a week when we go to church, but daily in our own personal lives. I often meet people that make excuses for reading their Bible and praying yet they can find time for many other less important things.

Having a set time with God has always been a struggle of mine, I am a big fan of sleeping in late, even if I have to get up early, it's as if my bed is a magnet and it pulls me and won't let me get up when on time and I wind up being in a rush to leave. That is why I have learned that I need to feed myself Spiritually before anything else. I encourage you to challenge yourself to do this, first thing you do when you get up: thank God for the day and dig into the Word.

Even in the Psalms, King David made mention of it several times, here is one of my favorite examples: Psalm 55:16-18a

As for me, I will call upon God, And the LORD shall save me. Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, And He shall hear my voice. He has redeemed my soul in peace from the battle [that was] against me,

Lately, I have had this eager desire to dig in the Word of God more and learn as much as I can and that has taught me so much about being prepared for the enemy's attacks. I have experienced in the past the lack of spending that quality time with God and how that hurts my walk. I love the way my pastor asks people he counsels whenever they come in with a problem, he will ask them if they have been praying and reading their Bible and many times people say no or maybe once when they were at church on Sunday but then left it to collect dust through out the week and he will tell them that is where they should start.

This book, as much as it might look like normal book to many, is the key to everything. It contains any possible subject and is our best weapon against the enemy, just as Hebrews 4:12 says

For the word of God [is] living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

It is clearly there! The Word of God is our best weapon against the enemy!! The sword! Just as Ephesians 6:17 mentions it (speaking of Spiritual warfare)

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

One last example I wanted to give was our Sinful Nature. I believe that it doesn't matter who you are or where you are in your walk with the Lord, you are still vulnerable to sin, we still fall into the evil traps of the enemy. Even Paul, this guy that wrote a big part of the New Testament claims to have "thorns in the flesh" and speaks about his sinfulness more than once. I can identify with him when he talks in Romans 7:15-22 (it is a little long but so powerful!)

For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that [it is] good. But now, [it is] no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but [how] to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will [to do], I do not do; but the evil I will not [to do], that I practice. Now if I do what I will not [to do], it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.

In order to fight sin we need to be in the Word: studying, praying and remain faithful. No matter where you are in life, you are not free from the attacks of the devil and will continue like that forever. Good thing for us is that we do have help, we have God, our wonderful Father and Maker to carry us on our back.

It's all about love

Love- It is amazing how much this simple, four letter word can be used in so many wrong ways in today's modern English language, don't you think?

People go out and about and use the word love, without even knowing what it means. People say "I love you" and not mean it, that is why it is so hard to say the "l" word sometimes.

The Bible sets many examples of what love is. In fact, there are many, many examples of what love is but the biggest one, is the love shown from God for giving His One and Only Son to die for our sins. I tend to think and ponder a lot about this act of sacrifice. I admit, I am a selfish person and it is not easy for me to give up anything or give things away to people, even those that I am close to; yet to imagine that my Creator would have such a love for me is amazing.

Today I got this verse from my pastor and I have been thinking a lot about it since, it is 1 John 4:7-12

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.
Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.

This specific passage has been engraved in my mind all day, specially since it was Valentines just a couple days ago.

I am not a big fan of Valentines, in fact, I can't stand this holiday. I believe it is such a manipulation from stores, flower shops and card companies to get money. It celebrates our materialism and how in the world (or more specifically here in the US) love= money and possesions.

Not only that, but Hollywood and the media have completely glamourized love and turned it into something material and not what it was originally intended to be. Now a days, people go around, pretending they are in love or not even taking it serious. Marriage seems to be the less popular option and couples stop trying at the first bump of their relationships. There are popular reality shows that glamourize the "sexy" side of "love". You have all these trashy "love shows" with all these trashy girls and stupid guys that just want to get their 15 minutes of fame, pretending that they want to be with the guy/girl from the show but knowing it would never work out.

I am against love that is taken for granted. I want to love, the way Jesus did!

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
(John 3:16)
We all know this verse by heart, I have heard 4 year old kids say it and not mess up on any word, we even may say that every Christian must know this verse. But do we really understand what it says? The Gospel of Jesus Christ is this: Our Heavenly Father who loved us so much that gave us His OWN Son to die for our sins. For my sins and your sins, for those that you commited and with commit. God is so merciful and we don't deserve His grace at all...yet He gives it to us!

This is another perfect example of what love is, it can't be any simpler than this:

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
(1 Corinthians 13:1-8)

I have always loved this passage because it explains that no matter what we do, if there is no love, then it's all worthless. Many people like to brag and boast about things they do, but if there is no love, then what is the point? Others say that they do many good things, but what motives do they have if it is not because of love?

We can't do anything without love and compassion! I think we get so enraptured in the things that we do that we forget what our reasons and motives are: to bring the glory to the Kingdom of God.

So there you go, just a little rant about love.

I have always been skeptic about evangelists.

Don't get me wrong, it is not that I don't agree with what many street evangelists do, but I have had experiences in my life that have shown me how phony some of these people can be. There are different types of Evangelists out there. Some are called the loud street preachers, I know you have seen them in the streets or busy neighborhoods, with big signs and yelling at people telling them how terrible they are and how they are going to hell. There are others that go out and deceive people, hidding the whole truth and sharing the so called "Prosperity Gospel" that tries not to offend people or hurt their feelings.

But today, I want to tell you about this awesome group of people that I have been able to know for a little over a year now: The Agents for Christ.

The Agents for Christ is formed by two families: The James Family and the Chaffee Family.

Last year, the Agents for Christ came to visit our church to speak to the year and Bill James shared his awesome testimony about how he used to be an undecover agent for drug operations. It was very impacting. I was able to build good friendships with both families and this weekend they came back to our church again to teach on the importance of straight up, Biblical and Scriptural-based evangelism.

What do the Agents do?

The travel around the US in RVs, stopping at different churches and sharing their stories and skills of Evangelism. But that is not the only thing they do, they also do hands on street evangelism sharing with the lost that they run into about the love of Jesus Christ. Their ministry truly amazes me, they have such a heart to share the Gospel with anyone and everyone, no matter what they look like or in which stage of their life they are in.

One of the things I love about the James and Chaffee Families is that just by talking to them, I could see how real they are. They set an amazing example for me and the people from my church that were able to spend some time with them.

After church, we joined them to go Evangelizing over at Young's Park, which for those from Las Cruces know it is always packed. God took us there for a reason since there was a Valentines Day Fundraising Event for Haiti and the park was full with people!

Usually, I don't feel too comfortable walking up to strangers and sharing the Gospel with them so I tagged along with Dave, one of the agents and a guy I have been able to get to know and briefly learn from him in the couple times I've talked to him. He had such an eagerness to share the Gospel with the lost and the way he approached people was with love and compassion for them, not yelling or pounding their heads with Bibles like other evangelists like to do. I was even able to talk to a few people in spanish about the Gospel. Overall, it was an amazing experience.

One thing that really touched my heart about the whole time with the Agents was seeing their kids and how at such a young age they are out there witnessing to people. Seeing those kids really inspired me and made me think about how I should do more of this.

As believers we are called to share the Gospel and the love of Jesus Christ to the lost. Out in the world there are so many people that are hurting and seeking, everyone is seeking something, they just don't know why.

I was reminded of the Great Commision:
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, [even] to the end of the age." Amen.

Matthew 28:18-20

And also:

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me [fn] in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
Acts 1:8

We are commanded to go share the Gospel with the lost, but we are called to share it in our communities. I know people who are very strong on overseas missions, which don't get me wrong, they are very good and I think that the people that do it are very admirable, but we also tend to forget how we are sorrounded DAILY by people that are lost: at work, school, in the streets, when we go grocery shopping, and even friends and family that don't know the Lord. We are called to share the Gospel to the lost, it doesn't matter who it is.

This experience with the Agents for Christ was great and such an encouragement and a blessing and I was reminded of how important it is to do something that I and many other Christians neglect, which is our calling to Evangelize the lost of the World.

I invite you to check out some more information about what the Agents are about in their website: http://agentsforchrist.org

Recently, I was given the opportunity to sign up to participate in an awesome ministry: Life Quest.

What is Life Quest?
Life Quest is an outreach and mentoring ministry geared to juvenilles detained in juvenile facilities.

Yes, I know...sounds crazy, right? But for those who know me, I have a heart for youth, specially lost youth. I work with at risk youth and part of what we do is prevent kids from getting themselves into situations or choices that can affect their future.

In December I helped out in the Christmas event over at the John Paul Detention Center just right outside of Las Cruces and let me tell you, that event completely changed my life. I didn't do much of the reaching out to the kids but I was able to help out and learn more about what the ministry is about. And in January 30th I went to the first training orientation.

Since the first orientation I could see how God is working here in New Mexico and in this State facility, which some of the staff have said it is a first since we all know how bad the government is about "religious activities", specially those that have to do with Christian Organizations. I am looking foward to what will be done in the months to come and in the way that God will use the volunteers and directors of Life Quest. It is amazing the group of people God has put together!

One thing that I have learned through out this experience is that there is no such thing as a lost cause. God is sovereign and don't get me wrong, those kids are locked up for a reason, but just like some of the kids that work with at the Weed and Seed program (my job), these kids are searching for a purpose and guidance, and that is where the Life Quest mentors come into play.

There is such a need for help so if you feel inclined or lead to help out let me know.

I can't even start describing how awesome this ministry is. I think you need a special kind of heart to volunteer. The saddest thing that I have seen in this world is that these kids have grown up thinking that there is no future for them and that no one cares for them, but that is the main thing: we care!

Jesus preached to the rejects of society, tax collectors, prostitutes. I believe that as the Christian community it is our task to do that same thing.

I will keep y'all posted on things that happen through this great ministry.

I invite you all to learn more about Life Quest, visit their website at http://www.lifequestusa.org/

Why "Three Twelve"??

"If everyone else is doing it, then why not me?"
I did think of that for a moment, but that is not the reason for me to start this blog. The real reason was an eager desire to share the things that I am learning in life and hope that the message of God is shared.

This is not another blog of rants and complains about "oh woe is me, my life isn't perfect blah blah blah blah...". You see, the Internet is truly an interesting invention, it can connect you to people anywhere in the world and you can share experiences even with those that are far away. It has really evolved ever since I remember using the internet for the first time when I was...I dunno, middle school? (wow! it's really been that long!)

It can also be used for evil. Did you know that more people spend time looking at stuff up the internet than with their loved ones? Or what about the evils that are out there such as pornography or even all the scams and stolen identities that people endure daily?

The purpose for this blog is to spread the Word and love of God and as I said before I will share experiences from life too.

So why "The Three Twelve"?

The title from this blog comes from one of my favorite Bible Verses:

"Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me."
(Philippians 3:12)

This verse has always been close to my heart, it encourages me every time that I read it. This verse reminds me of how we are not perfect yet and we can't achieve perfection, but that through maturing and growing we get closer to it. And also, that no matter what the circumstances of life might be, God never abandons us and never leaves. That we are to depend on Him and seek Him in every moment.

So enough ramblings, hope anyone reads this and that hearts are touched.
